The heroine of the Book of Esther in the Hebrew Bible, originally named Hadassah.[1]

One of the main figures of the Book of Esther, and the cousin and guardian of Esther, who became queen of Persia under Ahasuerus.[1] His refusal to bow before the grand vizier Haman, on the ground that he was a Jew, set in motion Haman's plot against the Jews of Persia.[1]
